Equalities Week: Women’s Network

20 November 2020 - 12:00

At Hertford, we are proud to have been one of the first five Oxford colleges to go co-ed.  46 years on, we recognise there is still more to do, especially considering the significant number of male dominated professions and statistics surrounding gender imbalance at the highest level.

On Friday 20th November at 12pm, we are excited to announce our inaugural Women’s Network event in which we will be discussing issues and worries specific to women entering the workplace and we will hear from four Hertford alumni who have overcome these perceived barriers.

Our panel will consist of Charlotte Hogg (CEO at Visa Europe), Carol Sennett (former Commissioning Editor at the BBC), Pip Wilson (Co-founder and CEO at amicable) and Paula Clarke (Legal Contractor at Citi).  At this event you will have the chance to hear from these women about how they got to where they are now and discuss issues surrounding gender equality today.

This event is open to all young alumni and current students.  If you would like to sign up, please fill in this Google form and we will send the Zoom link out for you to join the call.

About our alumni speakers…

Charlotte Hogg (History and Economics, 1988)
Charlotte is executive vice president and chief executive officer for Visa’s European operations.  Charlotte brings more than 25 years of experience in financial services, bank operations and management consulting to Visa.  Most recently, Charlotte served as chief operating officer for the Bank of England, from 2013 to 2017.  Prior to this, she led retail distribution for Santander in the UK and previously worked at Experian as the managing director of UK and Irish operations.

Carol Sennett (History, 1982)
Carol is an award-winning television executive.  As BBC Commissioning Editor she was responsible for the acquisition of factual programmes globally, shaped media policy at the European Commission, and played a strategic role in the launch of three BBC channels.  Over her 35 year career she has won two international Emmy’s, and worked with countless leading names including David Attenborough, Jonathan Dimbleby and Judi Dench.

Paula Clarke (Jurisprudence, 1992)
Paula Clarke is a debt capital markets lawyer. She currently works as a consultant lawyer at Citigroup, advising on capital markets regulation and Citi’s Brexit planning, as well as general debt capital markets transactional work.  That means bonds to the uninitiated. She trained at Clifford Chance and worked at various law firms until 2014 when she became a self-employed consultant lawyer, working in investment banks.

Pip Wilson (Maths, 1993)
Pip is a two times entrepreneur who co-founded Bluefin Solutions in 2002 which grew into a global consultancy firm before being sold in 2015. She is now the co-founder and CEO at amicable; an innovate business looking to change the way people divorce globally. She is also Deputy Chair at The RSA and a Board Trustee for The Girls Network.  She is passionate about empowering women in tech, creating connections and disrupting traditional business models and regularly invests in female-founded businesses.

Nicola Bruce (PPE, 1987)
Nicola is a portfolio non-executive director currently on the Boards of the Anchor Hanover Group (the UK’s largest provider of housing and care for older people), CS Healthcare (a private medical insurer) and Wings Travel (a global corporate travel business).  After reading PPE at Hertford and completing an MBA at INSEAD, Nicola spent 20 years as a strategy consultant and as a Partner at The Monitor Company (now Deloittes) where she led strategy projects for many leading consumer brands.  Nicola also spent a number of years at De La Rue plc, the banknote printer, as Group Director of Strategy.
