Darwin Dinner 2020
12 February 2020 - 17:30
We are delighted to invite you to the annual Hertford College Darwin Dinner on the 12th of February 2020. It will be 211 years since his birthdate.
Our guest speaker for the evening will be Dr Erica McAlister, Senior Curator of Diptera at the Natural History Museum in London. She will speak about her career in curation and her recent book, The Secret Life of Flies (2017). The author will bring along paperback copies of her book for sale for £10 each. If you wish to purchase one of these books on the night, please tick the box in the registration section and bring cash to the event.
As in previous years, we plan to have a question and answer session for our current students on careers in biology, biochemistry, or related science industries. We are looking for alumni volunteers that would be interested to participate in the question and answer session, especially if you have experience in publishing, scientific outreach, or in museum work. The question and answer session will be held from 5.30-6.30pm prior to the dinner in the Old Lodgings, with drinks to follow. If you would like to be involved with the Q&A session, please tick the box in the registration section and we will get in touch with more information.
As part of our dinner, we are also planning to have a vegetarian meal as the main course, with the intent of highlighting the importance of change in human dietary habits to protect world biodiversity. Should you wish to opt out of the main meal option, there will be a chicken dish offered. Please let us know in advance if you would like the meat main course or if you have any other dietary requirements when you RSVP.
The cost of the dinner will be ÂŁ30 per person for alumni and ÂŁ15 for students. If you would like to attend please RSVP using Eventbrite before Friday 7th February. Given that the timing of this dinner is during term time it is not possible to offer overnight accommodation in the College, but we hope that this won’t prevent those from outside Oxford joining us.
The dress code is smart/casual.
The schedule will be as follows:
5:30pm – 6:30pm: Alumni-Current student Q&A session
6:30pm – 7:15pm: Drinks and book signing, The Secret Life of Flies, Dr Erica McAlister
