Britain’s Constitutional Crisis: Brexit, the judiciary & the rule of law
29 November 2019 - 17:30
‘A constitutional lawyer is a lawyer who has abandoned the practice of law and gone into politics’ (William Taft): The Supreme Court and the Prorogation of Parliament
Join Hertford lawyers Lord Pannick QC (1974) and Deok Joo Rhee QC (1992) as they discuss Brexit’s impact on the judiciary. David Pannick led Gina Miller’s legal team in the recent Supreme Court hearing on the prorogation of parliament, while Deok Joo – the first British-Korean QC – acted on behalf of the Shadow Attorney General in the same case. This event will be hosted in the Weston Library Lecutre Theatre. Please register for your free ticket on Eventbrite.
The experience of attempting to leave the EU has exposed fault-lines and weaknesses in key British institutions – the operation of constitutional law, the role of the media and the hoped-for independence and impartiality of the Civil Service. Whatever happens next, Britain needs to think hard about whether its institutions are fit for purpose.
