Britain’s Constitutional Crisis: the Civil Service
22 November 2019 - 17:30
The second in a brand-new series of lectures organised by Hertford Principal Will Hutton: Britain’s Constitutional Crisis.
Join Hertford almnus Sir Oliver Robbins (PPE, 1996) for an insider’s view of the Civil Service. Olly has been in the Civil Service since he joined HM Treasury after gradaution. Having held a number of high profile roles, including latterly being the Prime Minister’s Europe Advisor, and prior to that the Permanent Secretary for the Department of Exiting the EU, he left earlier this year. This event will be hosted in the Weston Library Lecutre Theatre. Please register for your free ticket on Eventbrite.
The experience of attempting to leave the EU has exposed fault-lines and weaknesses in key British institutions – the operation of constitutional law, the role of the media and the hoped-for independence and impartiality of the Civil Service. Whatever happens next, Britain needs to think hard about whether its institutions are fit for purpose.
