The Hertford Society

What is the Hertford Society and why should you become a member?

Our aims are:

  • to keep old members of Hertford in touch with the college and bring them together, both in Oxford and elsewhere, alongside the separate programme of events organised by the college’s Development Office; and
  • to find ways of supporting the college, mainly by making donations and gifts for a range of significant small-scale projects which might not normally be given priority by the college.

We hold a social event in Hall every year: an annual summer buffet lunch and, every third year, a black-tie dinner. In 2023 the Hertford Society AGM and Summer Buffet Lunch will take place in college on Sunday 25 June. Please save the date, further details will follow. We also occasionally organise other events in London. In October 2022 we held a tea in the House of Lords, attended by over 100 members and their guests, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Society.

We try to help the college in small but, we hope, significant ways. This has ranged from arranging the restoration of 13 of the most historic portraits in the Hall, to providing garden seats in the OB Quad and contributing to the upkeep of Simpkin, the college cat. We also make regular financial contributions to the MCR and JCR to support their Freshers’ Weeks.

General enquiries about the Hertford Society may be made to its Secretary Graham Jones or Membership Secretary Christopher Mockler.

How to join

  • For current members of the JCR and MCR and those graduates in their first year after going down from college, the subscription is ÂŁ10 a year for the first three years. (Thereafter, the full subscription of ÂŁ25 a year applies.)
  • For all other Hertfordians (both matriculated former students and members of the SCR) the subscription is ÂŁ25 a year.

You pay the subscription in the form of an annual direct debit to the Hertford Society Members’ Fund. (Tick either A gift of ÂŁ10 or A gift of ÂŁ25 as appropriate; then Recurring Gift; and in the subsequent Frequency menu, choose January 2 of every year, to start on 2 January next year.)

Join now: Hertford Society Members’ Fund

*Please note that the Hertford Society is independent of the college. Your annual payment of £10 or £25 goes into a separate Hertford Society Fund which (though administered by the college) can be used only for the Society’s charitable purposes.

The Society has its own tie and scarf:

  • Society scarf

Silk screen design by Eliza Southwood (better known for her cycling themes) – dimensions 15″ x 48″, ÂŁ40. Enquiries to angela.fane@btinternet.com

  • Society tie

Silk tie with gold Hart’s head on maroon background – ÂŁ22.50. Enquiries to jon.billowes@gmail.com
