St John’s College talk on the economics of Scottish Independence

19 June 2013

St John’s is delighted to invite all Oxford University alumni, or current Oxford University students living in Scotland, to a talk in Edinburgh by Professor John Kay on the economics of Scottish Independence.

The talk will be held at the Royal Society of Edinburgh on Wednesday 19th June. The evening will start at 6 pm with drinks and canapĂ©s followed at 6.30 pm by Professor Kay’s talk.

A poll taken last year for the Scottish Social Attitudes survey asked Scots how they would vote in an independence referendum if independence would leave them ÂŁ500 per year better off. They replied that they would vote two to one in favour. The survey also asked how they would vote if they would be ÂŁ500 a year worse off. Then there would be a two to one majority against. So which is the answer?

Professor Kay is one of Britain’s leading economists and was a member of Alex Salmond’s Council of Economic Advisers in the SNP’s first term of office. He has been much involved in the economic issues surrounding the independence debate and is now consulted by all sides. There will be an opportunity to discuss not just the economics of independence but the global economic developments which may be more important for Scotland’s future prosperity. Professor Kay will take questions after the talk.

All are welcome, but booking is essential. If you would like to attend, please email alumni [dot] office [at] sjc [dot] ox [dot] ac [dot] uk by Friday 7th June stating your name, College affiliation and number of guests.
