Living Wage

Hertford Principal Will Hutton has today announced that the college has been accredited by the Living Wage Foundation. Timing the official announcement to coincide with news that the University, together with Wadham and Oriel colleges have also announced that they will be accredited from April 2015, he commented:

Hertford is already paying the living wage and accredited to the Living Wage Foundation last October as the first college to do so – and it is good that now both the university and a number of colleges intend to do the same. Many of those who receive the living wage are the indispensable bedrock of college life, and I am delighted that all our members were united in acknowledging this and so joining the Living Wage Foundation.

Hertford’s Housekeeping staff said they were delighted with the result and ‘hoped other colleges would follow the college’s lead’. Bursar James Lazarus added his satisfaction ‘that Hertford were the first college to accredit and have been paying the Living Wage to all our staff from 1 November 2014. It has been so good to have students, fellows and staff united in supporting this excellent campaign”. We particularly salute the generations of JCR campaigners who brought this issue to the top of the college’s agenda.
