Paramore – Decode
One of the first songs I remember being obsessed with when I first got Spotify at 14, so there’s a lot of nostalgia associated with this song.
-
Pentatonix – Say Something
A terribly sad song, but provides comfort for me when I need something a little more sombre. Almost therapeutic to listen to.
-
Frank Ocean – Pink and White
I think it’s safe to say this song defined my teenage years. A 10/10 feel good song, just good vibes all around.
-
Ahmad Zahir – Sultan Qalbam
Breaking the mould with a non-English song, this is what I grew up listening to my parents sing around the house. Zahir’s voice is genuinely one of the most beautiful I’ve ever heard, and to this day I identify this song with long family drives and Eid meals.
-
Kendrick Lamar and Sza – All the Stars
If ‘Pink and White’ defined my teenage experience, then this song defined the 16-18 period for me. Both sad and hopeful, this is a good song to listen to if you’re just chilling with friends, and provides the perfect background music to the manifestation of deep conversations and good times.

Lindsey Stirling – Song of the Caged Bird
I’m not the biggest fan of classical/instrumental music but this is always a solid choice whenever I want to relax and not concentrate on the music too much. One of my favourite songs to play alone in my room at the end of a long night.
-
Daniel Caesar ft Koffee – Cyanide
A recent fav, but would provide immaculate listening for a desert island getaway. Daniel Caesar and Koffee’s voices are stunning together, and the chorus just ties up an already fantastic song.
-
Bruno Mars – Locked Out of Heaven
Literally nothing but good memories associated with this song. One of the few songs that has consistently stayed in my most-listened-to list since I started listening to music seriously, and I could not name a single person that actually dislikes it.

Book
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. Hosseini beautifully describes the experiences of women in 20th century Afghanistan, a lot of which resonated deeply with the women in my own family. This was the book that got me digging into my family history a little further, and is where my interest in the female experience within historical events began – an interest that would later influence my choices at higher levels of education.
