MEET THE TEAM
Hi, my name is Abbi and I have just finished my first year studying English Literature and Language at Hertford. I’m from Leeds, a Yorkshire lass at heart, and have thoroughly enjoyed becoming part of the Hertford community here in Oxford. I have had the best year; trying out ultimate Frisbee, becoming obsessed with Zumba, and helping out at the Oxbridge Conferences in Newcastle. I can honestly say that I have already made life-long friends and have loved making the most of university life.
Over the past year, I have also developed my interest in international development, completing a micro-internship for a Ugandan community empowerment centre improving their services to aspiring entrepreneurs. This led me to a 6 week summer internship programme offering further support to similar social projects. Through the opportunity to work on the telethon, I am looking forward to supporting efforts that will continue to make Hertford a progressive, friendly and supportive environment.
Hi, I'm Adam and I'm a freshly graduated geographer from Hertford College, about to start studying a Master's in Public Health at the University of Sheffield. Over those three years, I have thrown myself at multiple access and outreach programmes, running OUSU's flagship outreach project Target Schools as well as becoming a part-time officer for access and admissions in my second year. The chance (for a third year in a row!) to support the access work that Hertford champions serves to bring me back to this campaign once more, even as an alumnus in pastures new!
As well as my love of access, I made hobbies of Australian Rules football, booking punk bands (once even DTB) and working in the glorious institution of Hertford bar, as well as making good use of Hertford's Trinity Term punts. The college has always been a key grounding point to my time here, in a city where its very easy to get lost in dreaming spires. Its an element of Hertford that I really appreciate, and have continually espoused when helping at university open days or chatting with alumni in the telethon years preceding this one. It seems like a tradition now, and Oxford loves traditions, so I just had to come back for another year!
Hi, I’m Adam, a soon to be second year Hertford medic who wants to be an Army doctor once (if I manage to) I graduate. In my spare time I do a lot of mountaineering and hiking, with some occasional water polo, hockey or martial arts. I really love Hertford because it’s such a close-knit friendly college, which is probably a good thing as I’m stuck here for 6 years! I also get involved with student politics and the Oxford Union in my spare time. I’m really looking forward to the telethon because it gives me the chance to give back to the college that’s helped me so much.
Hi, I'm Annie a second year geographer from Bolton, and I'm the current JCR sports officer! I spend most of my time playing football for the University 2nds women's team and rowing for HCBC's W1 boat. I was also part of the college teams that won cuppers for women's football (both 11 and 5 a side), women's basketball and women's triathlon, alongside playing for the league title winning mixed lacrosse team. I love participating in college sport, and this is one of the reasons why I'm really passionate about making sure that nobody's financial situation deters them from participating fully in university life. I'm back to help on the telethon for the second year in a row to help raise funds for teaching and research. I look forward to speaking to you!
Hi, my name is Arran, I study History. So far at Hertford, I have been able to take up sports in a friendly environment, and have played Squash and Football for the college. I am probably a more adept follower of football than I am a player! I support Liverpool FC despite having never actually been to Liverpool or being able to explain any reasonable connection to the club. I love to travel, and am therefore very excited that Hertford College will be allowing me to visit the United States this summer for my dissertation research. It is amazing that Hertford can help to fund such trips. After History I am planning to convert to Law, something which Hertford has been very helpful with, planning a number of networking events. I am also the Welfare Officer for the JCR which has allowed to truly experience the loving community that Hertford is trying to create, which is something I am very grateful to have been a part of.
Hi, I’m Charlie and I’ve just finished my third and final year studying maths at Hertford. I’ve loved my time here, and I am really looking forward to the chance to talk to alumni about their experiences of the best college in Oxford! I’ve been heavily involved in sport during my time here, in particular captaining the rugby team, and helping to organise this summer’s tour to Mongolia. I’ve also enjoyed the social side of college life, working in (and frequenting) the bar, and spending too much time sat in OB quad on a “break” from the library. Next year I plan to travel to Tulwap in Western Kenya to teach in a local secondary school, before starting a career as an Actuary in September 2018.
Hi, I’m Ella and I studied Economics and Management here at Hertford but I'm graduating this September! I have literally tried to get involved with everything Hertford, signing myself up to everything from Hertford Business and Economics Society to Netball Captain to JCR president. I love playing sport and seeing the world. I’m planning to move to Paris in October to learn French and teach English out there and from then on who knows... I am looking forward to talking to Alumni about their experiences at Hertford!
Hi, I’m Jenny a soon to be second year studying Archaeology and Anthropology. I'm excited about working on the telethon this year as I love being in and around Hertford due to its friendly, welcoming environment and bubbly personalities. I love fundraising and talking to others about their experiences - really looking forward to speaking to alumni about their time in college.
Outside of Archaeology and Anthropology, I enjoy travelling and will be spending my summer in various places such as Borneo, Greece, Italy and Spain. I also enjoy reading, writing and dancing so hopefully I will have time to fit everything in. After university I’m unsure what I plan to do but I guess I have plenty of time to figure this out!
Hi, My name is Junyan. I am going to be 2nd year MPhil student here at Hertford studying general linguistics. When I was applying I heard that Hertford is one of the most friendly, inclusive and diverse colleges in Oxford - and after a year full of colorful, precious and happy memories, I would say indeed it is! Hertford has given me much support for both my life and study. I would love to do something in person to benefit the future development of this great college in return, thus I applied for this job. I am very excited to join this year's telethon team.
I love playing the piano in my spare time and particularly enjoyed Baroque music. Last term, the Hertford Colllege Music Society helped me hold my very first personal recital in the college chapel. It was so nice! Also, as a linguist, I have a great passion towards languages and different cultures. Apart from my mother tongue Chinese and my first foreign language English, I am also fluent in Japanese, and speak a little bit French. I am a fan of Japanese animation, Chinese traditional literature as well as travelling.
Hey everyone, I’m Ollie and I’ve just finished my first year reading Geography. Immediately when coming to Hertford I was struck by how friendly and welcoming the college was; I hardly had to carry any bags to my room when I first arrived as there were so many people offering to help! The Geography groups at Hertford are great, making all the freshers feel welcome and giving us a hand on the (numerous!) occasions I asked for one. I also try to get involved in as much sport as I can at Hertford, rugby especially, and by the time the telethon comes around I will have returned from a college rugby tour to Mongolia, so will be able to offer some fine anecdotes about what will be an incredible trip. The telethon is a great way to give back to this brilliant community - I can’t wait to talk to many of you!
Hi! My name is Paavan and I’m about to begin the fourth year of the Computer Science and Philosophy degree. Studying at Hertford has been an incredible opportunity; I feel so grateful and honoured to be taught by tutors who are so knowledgeable and who dedicate so much time to our learning. During my time at college I have been part of the JCR Committee, the Chapel and the college choir. I have also cultivated one of my passions since coming to Oxford: performing magic. Since I was 13 I loved close-up magic and card tricks, and, during my first-term at Oxford, I was hired to work at a charity ball. This escalated hugely, and I've been lucky enough to perform for 20+ colleges, as well as at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and on the Varsity skiing trip.
My favourite thing to do in college is sit on OB quad (when its sunny!) with a book (and occasionally a cat) in my lap; I’m looking forward to chatting with Hertford alumni to hear about their memorable experiences and learn what were their favourite things to do when at college.
Hi I'm Philippa and I've just finished my first year here at Hertford reading geography. It's been one of the best years of my life and the great community atmosphere at college definitely helped make it so special as well as all the extra curriculars on offer. I joined HCBC in Michaelmas and rowed with W1 for torpids and summer eights in which we achieved great success which I hope to build on next year as captain with our hertford4headship campaign! It was great to see so many of our alumni, including Zoe Lee there to support us and make the team feel part of something so much bigger. Hertford is such an amazing place to live and learn, and I'm especially appreciative of the kind atmosphere as someone from a less advantaged background who was unsure if they'd fit in at Oxford, but Hertford has proved me wrong completely.
Hi my name is Simon and I am a History and Politics student entering second year. As an international Fresher, I have hugely enjoyed both my course and Hertford’s welcoming and open atmosphere in my first year, and look very much forward to next term. Student life so far has led me into different sports, singing in the choir and campaigning with OUSU, but I feel like there’s still much more to discover in the future. I love to read and explore new things, try to stay up to date in the field of politics and always enjoy a good discussion! Being really curious about the variety of paths running from Hertford, I am looking forward to hearing from alumni in the telethon!
