We encourage any school or college interested in Hertford to pay us a visit, whether for a college tour or to participate in one of our Taster Days which can be specifically tailored to the needs of your group.
Aspiration & Taster Days
We regularly welcome groups from our link regions and beyond to discover what studying and living in an Oxford college might be like. Our events are aimed primarily at state schools in our link regions of Essex, Southend-on-Sea, Medway and Camden, but are open to all state schools in the UK. We can accommodate groups of up to 25 and work mostly with most-able students in Years 9-12. We’re happy to tailor the visit to suit your schedule – just get in touch.
KS4 Aspiration Days
These visits introduce students to the idea of a research-intensive university like Oxford through information sessions and the opportunity to meet our students and academics. They always include one or more academic taster sessions and a Q&A and college tour with current undergraduates. We’ll also provide a hot lunch in our dining hall. Depending on your schedule, we can also arrange visits to other colleges, departments and museums within the University. These events are offered free of charge and all we ask is that you arrange your own transport – please get in touch if you have any difficulties with this.
KS5 Taster Days
This is an opportunity to experience Oxford for the day and discover what it might be like to study here. Aimed at your most-able Year 12s, we’ll discuss Oxford’s distinctive features and talk through the different stages of our application process, including how to make a competitive application. Taster Days always include one or more academic taster sessions and a Q&A and college tour with current undergraduates. We’ll also provide a hot lunch in our dining hall. Depending on your schedule, we can also arrange visits to other colleges, departments and museums within the University. These events are offered free of charge and all we ask is that you arrange your own transport – please get in touch if you have any difficulties with this.
Other outreach initiatives
We’re a keen supporter of Oxford University’s flagship UNIQ scheme, which offers summer schools, spring residentials and digital mentoring free of charge to students from UK state schools. UNIQ was established in 2009 to reach out to potential Oxford students from low socio-economic backgrounds and areas of little progression to higher education. At Hertford, we accommodate residential students on the summer school, giving them the opportunity to live in an Oxford college for a week and experience the social and academic opportunities which are available here. You can follow UNIQ students’ experiences on their Instagram channel.
We’re also proud to support a wide range of University-wide initiatives, including the Open Days that take place in summer and September each year. We participate in the Oxford Pathways Programme, designed to encourage aspiration and achievement at GCSE level, and offer tours to complement departmental admissions talks and open days throughout the year.
To plan a visit to Hertford with your school or college, or to enquire about our outreach programme and the support we can offer schools, please contact a member of outreach team who will be happy to help.
Individuals can make arrangements to visit Hertford by contacting our Admissions Officer. If you’re a prospective applicant, you’ll always be welcome to enquire at the Porters’ Lodge and ask to have a look around college. As the college is sometimes closed for events (such as graduations) it’s always best to get in touch before travelling, as we’ll normally be able to arrange for you to meet with someone from the outreach or admissions team too.
