The Oxford English degree is a wide-ranging, historical course covering literature in English from the earliest period to the most recent. In the first and second years you study prose, poetry, and drama from every historical period. In the third year you can specialise as you complete a dissertation and other assessed work. The English course at Oxford has just been ranked number 1 in the world by the QS World University Rankings (April 2016).

Teaching and learning

English at Hertford is characterized by intellectual seriousness and literary enjoyment.  The Times Good University Guide (2015) picks out Hertford as a particularly strong college for English, saying our 'teaching is generally thought admirable'.  We encourage our students to develop their own interests and to relish working hard and independently, and we are proud of our academic results.  Our main qualifications are that you should be intellectually able and ambitious (so as to be able to cope with our rigorous and demanding course and work load), and that you should really enjoy reading widely and thinking about what you read. In return, you will find an intellectually stimulating and unpretentious academic atmosphere in which you can develop your critical skills.
