Nail-biting University Challenge appearance
21 August 2018
Our appearance on last night’s University Challenge was nail-biting for everyone at Hertford.
Our team of students took on Clare College, Cambridge with great enthusiasm, successfully answering questions on indie bands, the deaths of Roman emperors, and a challenging picture round on kennings (according to Wikipedia: ‘a type of circumlocution, in the form of a compound that employs figurative language in place of a more concrete single-word noun, strongly associated with Old Norse and later Icelandic and Old English poetry’).
In the last minute the scores were 150 a piece and everything came down to the last starter question before the buzzer. Check out the episode on the BBC iPlayer to find out how it all ended…
Congratulations to our amazing team of undergraduates – Stephanie Woodgate, Pat Taylor, Richard Tudor and Chris Page.
UPDATE (13/11/18)
Our team made it through to the highest-scoring losers’ playoff… and beat Exeter University 215-165. We’re looking forward to the second round now and have got all our fingers crossed that we’ll go far in the competition. Go Team Hertford!
UPDATE (27/11/18)
Unfortunately our team met their match with the University of Manchester in last night’s game. Competing against a team of graduate students from Manchester, our fab four were in the lead for the first 10 minutes. It was not to be, however, and Hertford finished with 115 to Manchester’s 185. Congratulations Woodgate, Taylor, Tudor and Page – you did Hertford proud!
