Librarian nominated for student-led award
20 March 2016
Unsurprisingly, our librarian Alice Roques has been recognised for her excellent support of Hertford students’ learning. She is nominated in the category of Best Support Staff in OUSU’s student-led teaching awards scheme for 2016. Nice work, Alice.
To say Alice always goes the extra mile is a laughable understatement. She provides unparalleled academic and pastoral support underpinned by her readiness to really listen to the needs of students.
She is extremely sensitive to the time pressures of Oxford academic life – I have requested a book that wasn’t in the library in the morning to find that Alice had cleared my request with tutors, purchased and catalogued the book, and pidged it to me by the end of the day.
She is extraordinarily creative, and decorates the library for Easter, Christmas and Halloween (when she also welcomes trick-or-treaters into her office with sweets), and her bunting – homemade from the pages of old books – is a perennial feature. Her hilarious signs balance the requisite library passive-aggression with her sardonic sense of humour. Alice has been an indispensable part of my three undergraduate years at Hertford, whether spending time with me in the stacks giggling over historical college statutes, providing tissues and Tunnock’s Tea Cakes for when things get too stressful, or trying to lure the college cat into her office for treats and cuddles. She is fantastic!
