Bridge swells numbers of centenarians
28 September 2013
Radio 4 has just reported a five-fold increase in the number of people living to 100 and those who reach that landmark this autumn can claim to be contemporaries both of the Hertford Bridge and of the first car production in Oxford. To mark this surprising double centenary we invited MINI Plant Oxford to join our celebrations and they sent their wonderfully quirky mini for a photoshoot under the bridge. Will Hutton, Principal of Hertford, and Rebecca Baxter, of MINI Plant Oxford (both pictured), were delighed to bring together two icons of the city and Will commented:Â
Who would have thought the bridge was just 100 years old! It captures perfectly the way in which Oxford – and Hertford in particular – is surprisingly modern, despite the appearance of antiquity. Hertford has a proud tradition of leading the way in admitting women and applicants from state schools and the centenary is the perfect way to celebrate that forward-looking mentality and to assess how we can build on the progress already made.
