Hertford Festival
8 August 2018
This weekend we hosted our Hertford Festival, three days of events celebrating the Hertford community.
Alumni and friends of the college enjoyed supper and a concert on Friday, children’s activities, tours and demonstrations on Saturday, and a stimulating round up of the weekend’s papers with Principal Will Hutton and Lord Andrew Adonis on Sunday. Guests also enjoyed a range of talks and discussions on Saturday. Principal of Lady Margaret Hall and former editor of the Guardian Alan Rusbridger discussed how journalism has been challenged by and responded to digital media, fake news and newspaper ownership, while alumni Gavin Brown (2007) and Malcolm Dowden (1983) spoke on how cryptocurrencies are changing the way we do business. Entrepreneurs Pip Wilson (1993) and Bahi Ghubril (1989) gave tips and insights into startups and business formation, while literary scholar Nick Groom (1985) discussed his recent edition of Frankenstein and how one writes about writing. The day concluded with Vanessa Collingridge (1986) and James Hawes (1978) considering different approaches to historical writing, and Todd Green (2001) spoke about the gaming industry and how products like Candy Crush have transformed the media scene.
