Hertford College Chapel Choir sings a late-night performance of Rachmaninoff Vespers on Shrove Tuesday — 12 February 2013 at 10 pm.
Rachmaninoff’s score works a number of styles of Russian church chants into a sublime whole. The unaccompanied harmonies lull one into a meditation, which suddenly surge to angelic crescendos before falling once again. Recordings of the Vespers were freely available throughout the Soviet period, keeping faith and tradition alive.
This will be a semi-liturgical performance in the chapel, showcasing the music of Rachmaninoff within a setting of candles, incense and icons.
