“I didn’t know what career I wanted to pursue when I was studying for my A-levels, hence I chose a mixture of arts and sciences. My decision to study “Archaeology and Anthropology” at Oxford enabled me to keep my options open. At the end of my second year I toyed with the idea of applying for Graduate Medicine, and undertook numerous hospital work-experience placements during the summer vacation. I also regularly volunteered at a nursing home, which I was introduced to by one of the staff at Hertford. During my third year, I volunteered on a weekly basis at a nursing home in Oxford. It was partly through these experiences that I started to consider nursing as a career instead. After graduating from Oxford, I applied to study Post-Graduate Adult Nursing at King’s College London. and began my two year Post-Graduate Diploma in the September.
I have now been qualified as Registered Nurse for four years. My speciality and passion is Stroke Nursing, and I am the Deputy Ward Sister on the Stroke Unit at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, (part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.) I have recently begun my Nursing MSc (also at KCL), with the intention of focusing on non-pharmacological secondary prevention initiatives in stroke.
I am currently undertaking a six month secondment as “Operational Sister” for the Acute Medicine Directorate. This role involves overseeing the management of seven acute wards,, and assisting with more complicated patient discharges, and facilitating patient flow to alleviate bed pressures.”
