Stipendiary Lectureship (6 hours) in History

1 October 2022 – 30 September 2023

Hertford College intends to appoint a Stipendiary Lecturer in Early Modern European History from 1 October 2022 to 30 September 2023. This is a part-time position and the lectureship can be held in conjunction with other similar positions. The successful candidate will work under the direction of Professor David Hopkin, and is replacement cover for Professor Giora Sternberg’s sabbatical leave.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake six weighted hours of teaching in Early Modern European History per week, averaged over the three terms. They will also be expected to assist with the organisation of History teaching at Hertford College, share pastoral responsibility for undergraduates reading History and its joint schools, and encourage student engagement with their subject. They will also share responsibility for the undergraduate admissions process (assessing applications and conducting interviews) in November and December 2022 for courses involving History.

Candidates should have a completed, or near-completed doctorate in early modern European history or cognate area. Experience of teaching undergraduates, preferably in small groups, would be an advantage, as would experience with Oxford undergraduate admissions.

The salary for the Lectureship will be in the range £13,962 to £15,703 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience, and will be pensionable with USS. The successful candidate will be entitled to associate membership of the college’s Senior Common Room (SCR), free lunches while undertaking teaching duties in term time and during vacations, and access to an academic allowance. Further particulars for the post are available below.

Applications must include a CV detailing all relevant experience, a covering letter, a college application form (available below), and a sample of scholarly work (article or chapter, published or unpublished, of no more than 10,000 words). Applications should be sent as one pdf string to academic-recruitment@hertford.ox.ac.uk by noon on Thursday 9 June 2022. Candidates should also arrange for their referees to write to the college by the same date.

It is anticipated that interviews will be held in the week commencing Monday 27 June 2022.

Details on individual paper specifications are available on request (contact giora.sternberg@hertford.ox.ac.uk).

Hertford College is an Equal Opportunities Employer.
