James holds an LLB from the University of Warwick (first class, with the legal theory prize), and a BCL from Hertford (distinction, with prizes in Advanced Property and Trusts and Constitutional Theory). He has been at Balliol since 2014, first as an MPhil and now a DPhil student, supported by the AHRC. His research lies at the intersection of jurisprudence and criminal law, looking at the relevance of a defendant's incapacities to their criminal culpability. He currently co-convenes the Jurisprudence Discussion Group.
