I took time out from my clinical training in London to come to Oxford and study for a DPhil in Clinical Neuroscience, supported by a Clinical Research Training Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust. I am a Specialist Registrar in Rehabilitation Medicine, and carry out research in the Vision Group at the Centre for Functional MRI of the Brain (FMRIB). I am interested in how people with loss of vision on one side (hemianopia) caused by a stroke or brain injury can respond to visual images in their blind field of vision, a phenomenon known as “blindsight”. I use functional and diffusion MRI to study changes in brain function and connections after damage to the visual centres. We hope that the results from this research will be used to help us develop more effective tools for rehabilitation.
