Alain Locke Portrait – Wednesday of 1st Week of Trinity Term 2017

A portrait of Alain LeRoy Locke will be unveiled on Wednesday, 26 April 2017 in Hall (by courtesy of the Van Vechten trustees who gave Hertford permission to make and display the print).

Born in 1886 in Philadelphia, Alain LeRoy Locke was the first African American Rhodes Scholar to come to Oxford. Despite outstanding work at Harvard, he was denied admission to several Oxford colleges because of race prejudice. He was admitted to Hertford, where he studied philosophy, Greek, and Literae Humaniores from 1907–1910.  He co-founded the African Union Society.
