Equality & the Arts Panel

Join us in Hertford Equalities Week for a panel discussion on equality and the arts. We’ll be hearing from three poets – Will Harris, Rachel Long and Jay Hulme – about activism, art, justice and social equality.
Will Harris is a poet of mixed Anglo-Indonesian heritage, born and based in London. He recently published his extended essay ‘Mixed-Race Superman’ to glowing reviews. In it, he looks at Keanu Reeves, Obama, and the experience of being mixed-race today. His writing has been published in the TLS, LRB, and the Guardian – and his debut pamphlet of poems, ‘All this is implied’, was the joint winner of the London Review Bookshop Pamphlet of the Year.
Rachel Long is a poet, an assistant tutor for the Barbican Young Poets programme (2015-16), and the leader of Octavia, a poetry collective for womxn of colour. She was also shortlisted for Young Poet Laureate for London, and has run poetry workshops for The Poetry School, the Serpentine Galleries, and Oxford University. She’ll be reading some of her poems – which explore race, class, and the women in her life that she loves.
Jay Hulme is an award-winning trans performance poet and educator. He’s worked with Amnesty International, Inclusive Minds, and has toured across the country. He campaigns for increased diversity within literature, especially in YA and children’s books. His collection of poetry, ‘Clouds Cannot Cover Us’, was published this October. He’ll be talking about the importance of honesty in art.

This event will take place in Hertford College’s Old Library, on the ground floor of the main quad. The room has step-free access and there is a disabled toilet, which requires a chair lift.
