Leadership award for Hertford medic
24 September 2016
Dr Antonia Lloyd Lavery has been awarded a prestigious Royal College of Physicians and NIHR Clinical Research Network award in recognition of her leadership contribution to Clinical Research in Oxford. Antonia talks below about her Hertford career:
My academic career began at Hertford College where I was inspired by my first experience of research during my preclinical training. I learnt a great deal from my tutors, Prof David Greaves and Dr Tom Cunnane, during my BA in Medical Sciences for which I was awarded a Wronker Grant. I completed my Finals research project at the Department of Pharmacology, focusing on cardiovascular and respiratory physiology and investigating the mechanism of action of Rho kinase inhibitors.
During my clinical training, also at Hertford, I developed a love of dermatology. After qualifying, my interest in research was strengthened by completing both academic foundation training and a dermatology academic clinical fellowship in Oxford. I studied skin immunology under the supervision of Prof Graham Ogg and through this I developed a passion for understanding inflammatory skin disease and developing new approaches to treatment.
I am delighted to have been awarded a Royal College of Physicians and NIHR Clinical Research Network award in recognition of my contribution to the leadership of NIHR Clinical Research Network Portfolio studies. My involvement in translational clinical research is a very rewarding aspect of my work. I am immensely grateful for the excellent training and support I received during my medical degree and having the opportunity to tutor Hertford students is a great privilege. I will always have the warmest feelings towards Hertford where I also acquired a love of black and white cats (RIP Simpkin) and a husband (Mark)!
Congratulations from all at Hertford.
