Lace in context
26 November 2014
David Hopkin (Hertford and History) and Nicolette Makovicky (Russian and East European Studies) have received a knowledge exchange grant to work with museums in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire on their lace collections.
The project is called ‘By the Poor, For the Rich: Lace in Context’. The East Midlands was the primary centre of the English handmade lace industry from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries. Although their expertise lies in continental European lacemaking, David and Nicolette aim to link the social history, oral culture, textile and art collections in the region, helped by lacemakers active today.
